pharmachologic effect
Pharmacological group:
Decongestant agent – vasoconstrictor (alpha-agonists).
Pharmacodynamics:
Xylometazoline is an imidazole derivative to sympathomimetic action. At low concentrations, it acts on the alpha2-adrenergic receptors, and in higher concentrations has an effect on the alpha 1-adrenoceptors. When applied topically, xylometazoline causes vasoconstriction mucosa, which leads to a reduction in edema and congestion of the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx, reduction of amount of discharge, nasal congestion relief.
Pharmacokinetics:
When applied topically, practically not absorbed, the plasma concentrations are so small that they can not identify with modern analytical methods. The action comes after 5-10 minutes and lasts for 5-6 hours.
